sick.

Sam is sick again. For us, the drill is routine: I see a runny nose and a slight fever and think "Here we go again." Sam's never been a normal kid as far as colds go. He has only once in his life had a cold that did not settle in his lungs. This time is no expeception; I was at the pediatrician's office this morning clutching my wheezing child and wondering if this is going to result in another trip to the ER. After a good listen to Sam's lungs, Dr. C. pronounced him officially asthmatic. She prescribed him a bigger dose of Pulmicort, extra Albuterol and children's Claritin to help dry out his secretions. We're hoping to avoid steroids this time around since they make him insane and we've already had enough of that lately.

I was very proud of Sam while we were at the office. Usually it's a struggle to keep him occupied (because of course they run perpetually 40 minutes late) but today he was as good as gold. He happily played with the balloon I made him out of a surgical glove and read books on my lap. When Dr. C. was filling me in on what we could expect in Sam's future, he pulled down her otoscope and made a thorough inspection of my ears. He was very professional about it all. Later he tried to shove his used tongue depressor in my mouth while shouting "Aaaaaahhhhhh!" at me. It was really priceless and shows how comfortable he is seeing the doctor. He should be, by now!

  1. Poor, sweet thing. Let's hope that you are just getting all the sick stuff out of the way now so that he can be a perfectly healthy, happy boy when he starts school so he can win all those coveted "perfect attendance" awards. :0)

  2. you know, my cousin's son has asthma, and they just removed his adenoids last summer, because they were getting really swollen and causing all sorts of problems. He got it done around age 5 or 6, because his mom was trying to avoid it, but it's been a HUGE help with his sickness. The kid has only needed a nebulizer treatment once since they did it, as opposed to the near-constant ones he had before. And whatever drugs they had him on were making him act out a lot, and that's all gone away and he's doing great in school and not fighting. It was outpatient surgery, and he was feeling fine by the next day.

Just a thought in case Sam ends up with a similar set of symptoms. Good luck!

  3. I think my tongue is depressed.
Poor Sam, it is amazing that he is as good as he is; with all that is going on in his little body.

  4. my son was always sick like Sam at his age. We got a T&A done at 3.5 and things have gotten better year after year. Now he has normal colds like most kids, but none the sent us to the ER for steriods in a bit now. Sam will get better, it all gets better

  5. I make those glove balloons, too! I also take 6 dixi cups and stack them into a pyramid to let her knock down. Exam rooms are horribly dull for little ones.

I hope your little dude doesn't feel crappy for too long.
